Standard Form

Standard Form

Standard Form is Ax + By = C  [OR] Ay + By + C= 0 (as reffered to in the textbook)

Slope intercept to Standard form

To turn an equation from slope intercept form to standard form all you have to do is use algebra to isolate variables.

Example:

Y = 4/3x + 2

3(Y)= 3(4/3x +2)

3y – 4x =4x + 6 -4x

-4x + 3y = 6

OR

-4x + 3y - 6 = 6 – 6

-4x + 3y - 6 = 0

Standard form to Slope Intercept

When converting standard form to slope intercept you are trying to isolate the variable y. Using your algebra knowledge you can do this with some very simple steps.

Example:

3x + 2y + 1 = 0

3x + 2y + 1 -1 = 0 - 1

3x - 3x + 2y = -1 - 3x

2y/2= (-3x – 1)/2

y = (-2/3)x – ½
