The atmosphere established at the beginning of the play is scary and anticipation. The witches were talking about the future looking grim which made an anticipation mood. As well, the thunder created a scary mood.

They are planning on meeting Macbeth in an open field after the battle.

 

  1. 3. Who are Graymalkin and Paddock? What is their significance in this scene?

Graymalkin and paddock are evil spiritual entities who summon the witches after their first meeting with Macbeth.

 

  1. 4. How does this scene create suspense?

The scene created suspense by the witches talking about what may happen in the future, and the thunder which creates a suspenseful and grim atmosphere.  Nature is in an uphevil, a battle is taking place, as well we are curious as readers to know what will happen in the battle. In the last 2 lines of the scene we see “Fair is foul and foul is fair” which makes as suspenseful atmosphere because we want to know what will happen.
